ENERGY STAR-labeled computers meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR efficiency requirements. These computers offer energy savings in three distinct operating modes: standby, active, and sleep. ENERGY STAR power management features place computers (CPU, hard drive, etc.) into a low-power “sleep mode” after a designated period of inactivity. Low-power modes reduce the spinning of the hard disk, which decreases power consumption. ENERGY STAR labeled computers also have a more efficient internal power supply than other less-efficient counterparts.
Energy-efficient computers use less energy, thus lower electricity costs for the businesses and lower CO2 emissions. EPA estimates that over the next five years, the updated ENERGY STAR labeled computers will save American businesses and consumers $1.8 billion in energy costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions from 2.7 million cars per year.
