As you are aware, the nationwide recycling market has undergone some dramatic changes this past year. In an effort to clean up MA's recycling stream and create a higher quality product, the Material Recovery Facility owners and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) worked together to create a statewide education initiative to help everyone become smarter recyclers: RecycleSmartMA. Cleaning up the recycling stream will reduce the cost impacts of contamination, and will help recycling facilities create a better, cleaner product.
Gretchen Carey, Recycling & Organics Coordinator for Republic Services, will join us to explain the Smart Recycling initiative and what it means for you. Carey educates commercial and municipal customers on how to recycle more efficiently. She is also helping to create the infrastructure needed to divert food waste.
As this will be the last meeting of the year for our waste subcommittee, there will also be time to summarize your facility's waste goals for 2018, what has been achieved / hasn't been achieved this year, and what next steps might look like..
