Set Higher Freezer/Refrigerator Temperatures

What Is It?

The standard temperature to refrigerate food safely is 40°F or lower. The standard temperature for freezing is 0°F or lower. Setting refrigerator or freezer thermostats as high as required by the Massachusetts Department of Health minimizes energy used for cooling. There are also products available that reduce the energy use of refrigeration by moderating food temperature directly, called Chilled Unit Energy Savers.

Benefits

Refrigerators and freezers use a great deal of energy and run almost constantly. By running these machines at—but not below—the minimum temperature required, less energy is used and food is still safe.
