Motion sensors automatically turn HVAC systems on when people enter and stay in a room and off when the room is empty. Unlike programmable thermostats, they do not work on a schedule.
Installing motion sensor thermostats in guest rooms helps reduce energy demand for heating and cooling as well as their associated costs. The actual savings depends on how long the guest is gone, the difference in temperature setting in an occupied versus an unoccupied room, and the relative size of the room. Some rooms may be unoccupied for the entire day, allowing for up to 12 hours of low energy use.
