Purchase Renewable Energy Credits

What Is It?

Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are tradeable energy commodities that serve as proof that 1 MWh of electricity was generated from a renewable source. The energy associated with a REC is sold separately and used by another party, so the consumer of a REC receives only a certificate; to purchase a REC is to claim the environmental impact of the renewable electricity generation.  Businesses can purchase renewable energy credits for all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from organization-owned buildings, fleets, and on-campus energy plants that generate power, heating, or cooling.

Benefits

RECs are dually beneficial for the environment and the economy: they are able to capture the particular environmental benefits of renewable electricity generation while allowing for the expansion of the market for renewable energy, creating additional revenue streams for the developers of renewable energy projects. Renewable Energy Credits are a relatively easy way for tenants who don’t receive their own energy bills to reduce their carbon footprint.
